O’Connell Electric Company has a long-standing and multifaceted relationship with the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), contributing to several high-profile infrastructure and modernization projects across the Lake Placid region and beyond.

Lake Placid Olympic Center Modernization
O’Connell Electric served as the prime electrical contractor for the $100 million revitalization of the Lake Placid Olympic Center. This extensive modernization effort began in 2019 and was scheduled for completion in 2022. Our scope included major upgrades to the electrical infrastructure supporting the Olympic Village, Whiteface Mountain, and the broader Lake Placid area—continuing a legacy that began when we powered the region for the 1980 Winter Olympics.
Key highlights:
- Upgraded and expanded electrical systems across the Olympic Center campus.
- Supported preparations for the 2023 World University Games, which brought over 3,200 athletes—more than double the number from the 1980 Olympics.
- Renovated the USA Arena and main entry, enhancing both functionality and visitor experience.
Whiteface Mountain & Transmission Infrastructure
Our involvement at Whiteface Mountain dates back to the original Olympic preparations, where we installed transformers at the summit and used helicopters to string transmission lines. In the recent modernization phase, we returned to upgrade systems and support new energy demands.
Gore Mountain & Olympic Sports Complex
O’Connell Electric contributed to:
- The replacement of a 34.5kV/5kV substation at Gore Mountain to meet increased load demands and replace aging infrastructure.
- Expansion of medium-voltage service at the Olympic Sports Complex, including underground feeders for a new lodge, biathlon track, mountain coaster, and pump house.
Olympic Jumping Complex
We provided electrical upgrade plans to support facility improvements at the Olympic Jumping Complex. This included new snowmaking systems and large-scale lighting enhancements to meet modern standards and improve safety and performance.
