Wallenda High Wire Acts – Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, Chicago

Nik Wallenda Highwire Acts – Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, and Chicago

At O’Connell Electric Company, we thrive on challenges that push the boundaries of engineering and innovation. Our collaboration with world-renowned highwire artist Nik Wallenda across three of the most daring stunts in modern history stands as a testament to our technical expertise, precision, and trust.
Niagara Falls (2012)

In a feat not attempted since 1896, Wallenda crossed 1,800 feet over the roaring Niagara Falls on a 2-inch, 8.5-ton steel cable. O’Connell Electric was selected for our deep experience in high-tension transmission line work. The installation required micropiles drilled 65 feet into bedrock on both the U.S. and Canadian sides, a helicopter-assisted lead rope pull, and tensioning the main cable to 60,000 pounds. Our linemen traversed the cable in custom-designed baskets to install stabilizers that prevented sway and twist. The cable was removed overnight to avoid disrupting the Maid of the Mist tours.

Grand Canyon (2013)

Wallenda’s next challenge took him 1,500 feet above the Little Colorado River in Arizona. The remote location—Hellhole Bend on Navajo Nation land—posed extreme logistical hurdles. Our crew and equipment were flown in by helicopter, and due to the terrain, we had to rig a special fiber line to draw the 1,400-foot cable across the canyon. The wire, strong enough to support a Boeing 747, was installed under intense wind conditions, with gusts reaching 48 mph.

Chicago Skyscrapers (2014)

In downtown Chicago, O’Connell installed two cables between three skyscrapers, one of which spanned 500 feet at a height of over 600 feet. This urban highwire act required meticulous coordination with city officials and structural engineers. Wallenda performed his second walk blindfolded, further raising the stakes. Our team’s ability to adapt to complex urban logistics and ensure absolute safety was critical to the event’s success.

Across all three projects, Wallenda and his team placed their lives in our hands. As he put it:
“I trusted these guys with my life… There is definitely a bond between us; definitely a trust thing. I had no doubt whatsoever”.

These projects not only showcased our technical capabilities but also our ability to deliver under pressure, in extreme environments, and with zero margin for error. From the mist of Niagara to the winds of the Grand Canyon and the skyline of Chicago, O’Connell Electric has proven that no challenge is too high
