O’Connell Electric served as the electrical contractor for the New York State Toll Conversion Project, a significant initiative aimed at modernizing the tolling system across the state’s Thruway system. The project was a $355.3 million investment that transformed the 570-mile transportation system by converting to cashless tolling.
The conversion involved the installation of 70 gantries equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and cameras that read E-ZPass tags and take license plate images, allowing vehicles to drive seamlessly without stopping to pay tolls. The project included more than 2,000 state-of-the-art cameras affixed to the gantries.
